A Word on Scoliosis Treatment
Scoliosis is a serious curvature of the spine that thousands of children and teenagers will be diagnosed with each and every year. It causes difficulty in walking and even breathing. It can definitely be a frustrating condition for children and preteens, because they are acutely aware of their appearances and how they are perceived by their peers. Anything that could make them stand out in a negative way can cause them great emotional distress. Luckily, there are several treatments out there that can prevent such distress.
When deciding on a treatment, there are several factors that a doctor will consider. For example, if the child’s spine is still growing, they will consider how severe the curvature is and how it affects the child’s lifestyle. They must also consider where exactly the curvature is and how likely it is to continue to progress. From this point, there are three basic types of scoliosis treatments that can be utilized.

The first is observation. This is normally used for slight curves that have a low risk of progressing further. Observation is also used on the types of curves that have proven able to correct themselves with completion of growth. As long as the condition is watched carefully, any progression of the curvature must be dealt with immediately to avoid any further progression.

The second treatment is orthopedic bracing. This is for slightly more severe curves. Bracing allows the spine to continue growing, but provides the extra support that a curved spine needs to keep from curving further before growth is completed. Braces are usually constructed of plastic and are specifically tailored to your child’s body, with padding and straps strategically placed to provide the prescribed amount of resistance for the particular amount of curving. While braces could be frustrating for a child to wear, they can still do everything they did before, including wearing the same clothes and even playing sports.

The third treatment is correction by surgery. This is reserved for the most severe curvatures or ones that have progressed rapidly. Back surgery for children can come with a lot of rehabilitation and possible complications, and is the reason that it is reserved for the most severe cases.

However, you can relax knowing that there are treatment methods out there that will help you deal with this troublesome condition. That way a child can live a fairly normal life.
