When sitting for a long period of time, it is important to have a chair that will provide good support to the legs and back. If the natural curve to the spine is not supported, place a pillow or a rolled up towel behind the back and keep the feet flat on the floor. If standing, place a stool or a box where one foot or the other can be given periodic rest.
There are some common over the counter medicines that can provide short-term relief, such as anti-inflammatory drugs that have a muscle relaxant. Exercise can also help to relieve the pain. There are several that you can try, one of which is to gently pull one knee and then the other to the chest and hold for ten seconds. Sometimes simply lying on the floor will help to relieve the stress on the sciatic nerve and relieve the pain, and getting plenty of rest can also help. But if the pain persists, it would be wise to contact a physician who can either prescribe stronger medication or perhaps physical therapy.
