While many may believe that back injuries at work most often occur due to the heavy lifting of objects, the truth is that individuals who sit while doing their work often suffer from more back injuries than those who are on their feet all day. However, precautions must be taken no matter what industry you are employed in.
Individuals who have poor posture and are sitting for prolonged periods of times in chairs that are not designed for this type of use will often suffer from back injuries. Furthermore, the placement of computer items and other job tools can cause back injury because the individual is reaching for, or using, an instrument in a manner which causes the person to reach or sit in a way that is beyond the recommended limits of motion.
At work, in order to eliminate the chance of back injury or to deal with an existing injury, there are several things that a person can do. First, if you are in a position where you are lifting and carrying heavy items, you should remember to wear proper back support. You also want to make sure you bend at the knees and lift with your lower back. If these steps are followed, the chance of injury, or further aggravating an existing injury, can be minimized.
If you are in a job which requires you to sit all day, there are things you may be able to do as well to minimize the risk of injury or further causing damage to an existing injury. You can first do this by working on correct posture. You can also research or ask your doctor what type of chair would be best for your specific injury. Many ergonomic items do exist for specific injuries. Also, work on the placement and arrangement of your work area. Ensure that you are working comfortably and that your items are placed in a way that doesn’t cause you to reach in an abnormal manner. You can also find ergonomic computer and work equipment to allow you this protection.
Taking care of your back at work is not a difficult task in that the simplest changes in workspace and how you sit can make an incredible difference. You may also notice that how you sit makes you feel better about yourself.
